Description

Sina Weibo (新浪微博) is a Chinese microblogging (weibo) website launched by Sina Corporation on 14 August 2009. It stands as one of the largest social media platforms in China, boasting over 445 million monthly active users as of Q3 2018. The platform has experienced remarkable financial success, evidenced by surging stocks, lucrative advertising sales, and substantial revenue and total earnings per quarter. In March 2014, Sina Corporation spun off Weibo as a separate entity and filed an IPO under the symbol WB. Following the IPO, Sina retained an 11% stake in Weibo, while Alibaba owned 32% post-IPO. Sina Weibo began trading publicly on 17 April 2014. In March 2017, Sina launched the Sina Weibo International Version, featuring a clean and concise user interface design and an ad-free feature. Despite its smaller volume, occupying one-fifth of the space of the original, it maintains all of the original's functions. In June 2018, Sina Weibo reached 413 million active users. In November 2018, it suspended its registration function for minors under the age of 14. Subsequently, in July 2019, Sina Weibo announced a two-month campaign called The Blue Plan to clean up pornographic and vulgar information. Despite its popularity, Sina Weibo has faced criticism for censoring its users.
