AOL
AOL (stylized as Aol., formerly known as AOL Inc. and originally as America Online) is an American web portal and online service provider headquartered in New York City. It is a brand operated by Verizon Media. AOL's history traces back to an online service called PlayNET, which licensed its software to Quantum Link (Q-Link) in November 1985. Q-Link launched a new IBM PC client in 1988, later rebranded as America Online in 1989. AOL became the largest online service, surpassing rivals like CompuServe and The Source. By 1995, it had about three million active users. AOL played a pioneering role in the mid-1990s Internet era and was a prominent brand in the United States. Initially offering dial-up service to millions, AOL expanded to provide a web portal, email, instant messaging, and a web browser after acquiring Netscape. In 2001, AOL acquired Time Warner in the largest U.S. merger at the time. However, its fortunes declined with the rise of broadband and the decline of dial-up. AOL was spun off from Time Warner in 2009, with Tim Armstrong as the new CEO, focusing on media brands and advertising technologies. Verizon Communications acquired AOL on June 23, 2015, for $4.4 billion.
