Twitter, Inc. was an American social media company headquartered in San Francisco, California. The company was responsible for operating the social networking service Twitter, as well as the Vine short video app and the Periscope livestreaming service. Twitter, the flagship product of Twitter, Inc., is a microblogging and social networking platform where users can post and interact with messages called "tweets". It allows registered users to post, like, and retweet tweets, while unregistered users can only read them. The service can be accessed through its website interface, Short Message Service (SMS), or its mobile-device application software ("app"). Initially limited to 140 characters, tweets were expanded to 280 for non-CJK languages in November 2017. Twitter has been described as "the SMS of the Internet" and has amassed millions of users worldwide. In addition to Twitter, Twitter, Inc. also operated Vine, a short-form video hosting service where users could share six-second-long looping video clips, and Periscope, a live video streaming app. Vine was eventually discontinued by Twitter, and Periscope was integrated into the Twitter platform.
